Three Weapons Against the Enemy: A Survival Guide for Rock Bottom
By Kate Waycrest, Gambling Recovery Coach.
You are lying on the floor. You have lost everything. The shame is crushing. The enemy whispers that you are worthless, that God has abandoned you, that there is no way out. In this moment, you need weapons - not human strategies, but spiritual armaments that can defeat the darkness attacking you from every angle.
This is not a motivational pep talk. This is a survival guide for the worst moments of your life. The three practices I am about to share with you are backed by peer-reviewed research - but more importantly, they are backed by Scripture and by the testimonies of countless believers who have walked through the valley of the shadow of death.
How Faith Increases Your Pain Tolerance at Rock Bottom
Here is the most utilitarian understanding of faith in Jesus Christ: it literally increases your capacity to endure pain. This is not metaphorical - it is neurological fact. A groundbreaking study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience used fMRI brain imaging to measure what happens when religious believers pray while experiencing pain. The researchers found that "religious prayer was associated with reduced pain sensation and reduced neural activity in parietofrontal networks involved in attention and executive control." Participants reported significantly lower pain intensity and unpleasantness during prayer compared to control conditions. Similarly, a systematic review in BMJ Open examining randomized controlled trials found consistent evidence that prayer reduces pain intensity, decreases pain-related stress, and increases pain tolerance in adults experiencing both acute and chronic pain.
When you truly trust in God - when your faith is strong and active through prayer - you unlock the ability to go through the valleys of life without feeling the mental and emotional pain as sharply. Your brain literally processes suffering differently. This is how Christ was able to endure the torture of the cross without breaking. He was in constant communion with the Father. His faith was not abstract belief - it was living, active trust that transformed His neurological experience of suffering. As Hebrews 12:2 tells us, Jesus endured the cross "for the joy that was set before Him." He could endure the unimaginable because He held onto the joy set before Him. He trusted the Father completely. And that trust - that faith - literally changed how His body processed the agony.
When you are at rock bottom, your first weapon is to activate your faith through prayer. Not to escape the pain, but to endure it with supernatural capacity. The research shows your brain will literally register less suffering when you are actively trusting God.
Why Praising God During Suffering Breaks Gambling's Hold
This is the most counterintuitive weapon in your arsenal - and the most devastating to the enemy. When you have lost everything and you are being attacked from all angles, when you feel completely forsaken and abandoned in life, the most powerful thing you can do is praise God. Most people could never and would never do this. Praise a God who allowed this suffering to come upon you? It seems absurd. It feels impossible. That is exactly why it works.
Consider Paul and Silas in Acts 16. They were beaten, bleeding, and chained in the inner cell of a prison. Their response? Midnight worship. "About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosened." That praise literally shook the foundations and broke their chains. Research from Vanderbilt University confirms the mental health benefits of worship, finding that people who attend religious services are less stressed, live longer, have lower levels of stress hormones, and demonstrate better immune function.
But here is what the research cannot fully capture: the spiritual warfare dimension. When you are truly in the most difficult moments of your life, in more pain than you can bear, it is the enemy who is attacking you. God allows it - not because He is cruel, but because this experience is anointing you for your future purpose. As I wrote in Why Knowing God Starts With Pain, the deepest intimacy with God is forged in the furnace of suffering. Job understood this when he declared, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him."
If you can let out a broken, cracked praise to Christ in that moment - when everything in you wants to curse God and die - it will have the power of a thousand suns. It completely defeats the enemy in that moment. Why? Because you are declaring something the enemy cannot stand to hear: that you are God's child and everything the enemy is throwing at you will not break your faith in God. Praise during doubt and suffering is the ultimate weapon against the enemy. It does not have to be beautiful. It does not have to be eloquent. It can be a whisper through tears. It can be a groan from the floor. But when you offer it, heaven moves and hell trembles. As Psalm 34:18 promises, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
The Abba Reach: Crying Out to God When Gambling Urges Hit
There is a somatic exercise - a practice involving your physical body - that can anchor you in those rock bottom moments when you cannot get out of bed or you are lying on the floor in despair. Research from Duke University's Body and Brain Laboratory has documented the powerful connection between physical postures and spiritual states, finding that body postures during prayer significantly impact psychological states and emotional experiences of connection to God. A recent systematic review in Frontiers in Psychology examined the neuroscience of Christian prayer and attachment, revealing that prayer activates similar neural networks as secure attachment relationships, providing a sense of safety and connection during distress.
Here is the practice: When you are at your lowest, reach your arms up toward the sky and say out loud: "Abba, I need help." This is the same word Jesus used for the Father. "Abba" is Aramaic for "dad" - not the formal "Father," but the intimate cry of a child who needs to be picked up. When Jesus faced His darkest hour in Gethsemane, this is how He prayed: "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will" (Mark 14:36). When you reach your arms up and call out "Abba," you are orienting yourself in the position of a vulnerable child who needs to be picked up. You are activating attachment neural networks. You are physically embodying surrender.
There is something else beautiful about the word "Abba" - it is a palindrome. It reads the same forward and backward. This is not accidental. It proclaims a profound truth: you started with God and you will return to God. Your origin and your destiny are the same. No matter how far you have wandered, you are moving back toward the Father who made you. As Romans 8:15-16 declares, "For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." The enemy wants you to believe you are alone, abandoned, cut off from God forever. The Abba Reach breaks that lie with your body and your voice. You are physically declaring your identity as a child of God who has a Father waiting to pick you up.
How to Use Spiritual Weapons Against Gambling Temptation
When you hit rock bottom - and in gambling recovery, you may hit it multiple times - here is how to deploy these three weapons. First, activate your faith through prayer. Even a whispered "Jesus, help me" begins to engage the neural pathways that reduce your pain sensation. Do not try to feel better first. Pray first, and let the faith do its work. Second, offer broken praise. It does not matter if you do not feel like praising. Say the words anyway: "God, I praise You even in this." The enemy cannot withstand praise from a suffering saint. Third, reach up and call for Abba. Physically extend your arms toward heaven and cry out, "Abba, I need help." Let your body remember that you are a child with a Father who loves you.
These are not magic formulas. They are spiritual weapons that work because they align you with truth: that you are not alone, that your suffering has purpose, and that your Father is waiting to pick you up. The enemy's strategy is to isolate you in shame and despair. He wants you to believe that God has abandoned you, that your situation is hopeless, and that you deserve every bit of the suffering you are experiencing. These three weapons demolish that strategy. Faith declares that you trust God even when you cannot see the way out. Praise declares that God is good even when your circumstances are devastating. The Abba Reach declares that you are His child and He is your Father.
Every gambler I work with has experienced rock bottom. Many have experienced it multiple times. But the ones who break free are the ones who learn to fight with spiritual weapons, not human strategies.
"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
- Ephesians 6:12
The gambling industry is powerful. The addiction is real. The financial devastation is crushing. But none of these are your true enemy. Your battle is spiritual, and your weapons must be spiritual.
The Invitation
If you are reading this from rock bottom right now - if you are in the pit of despair after another devastating loss - I want you to try something before you close this page.
Right now, wherever you are, reach your arms up toward the ceiling. And say out loud: "Abba, I need help."
It might feel foolish. It might feel pointless. Do it anyway. Let your body remind your soul who you belong to. Let the Father who has been waiting for you hear your voice.
Then, from that position, offer whatever praise you can muster. It might just be: "God, I praise You that I am still alive." That is enough. That is a weapon.
Finally, trust. Trust that the pain you are feeling right now will not crush you because your faith gives you supernatural capacity to endure. Trust that this suffering is preparing you for something. Trust that your Father has not abandoned you - He is closer to the brokenhearted than He is to anyone else.
You have weapons. Use them.
