Why Knowing God Starts With Pain, Not Blessings: The True Alchemy
By Kate Waycrest, Gambling Recovery Coach.
Most gamblers believe they would meet God through gambling. Think about it - every single bet, you held your hand out to God hoping for a blessing big enough to convince you that He is real and that He loves you.
"Just this once, God. Just let me win this one. Show me You are there."
But here is the truth nobody wants to hear: knowing the Lord does not start with blessings. It starts with pain.
So if you are a compulsive gambler at rock bottom right now - if you have lost everything, if you are drowning in shame and despair - you are actually in the perfect position to finally reach out to God. Not through another bet. Through consistent prayer and the surrendering of your pain.
All God wants to do is take your pain away. But you have to offer it to Him. Every single day.
This is the hidden truth research confirms and the Cross already revealed: faith in Christ is the key to pain tolerance and pain transcendence.
Why Emotional Pain Drives People to Gamble
Every morning I wake up around 5 AM and speak to the Lord - about the day before, my dreams from the previous night, and I listen for words and feelings from the Holy Spirit. This is not theory for me. It is practice. And this morning, He showed me something I need to share with you about pain.
Pain is not just a sensation. Pain is a spirit that wants to travel, to propagate, to expand.
When we carry deep pain within ourselves - childhood wounds, betrayals, losses, shame - we instinctively seek to pass it on. To our spouses. To our children. To strangers on the internet. To slot machines that cannot feel what we deposit into them. All our pain gets passed down if we do not learn how to truly deal with it.
That is why humanity has created so many elaborate systems for avoiding and distracting ourselves from pain: alcohol, drugs, media, music, romance, sex, art, gambling, fantasy, fiction. We get furious when someone threatens our chosen method of pain management.
I understand why some gamblers get angry at my content.
The Science Behind Pain Tolerance and Addiction Recovery
A landmark experimental study compared spiritual meditation to secular meditation and relaxation techniques. Participants practiced their assigned technique for 20 minutes daily over two weeks, then placed their hands in ice water (2°C) for as long as they could endure.
The results were striking:
"Spiritual meditation participants had greater decreases in anxiety and more positive mood, spiritual health, spiritual experiences, and pain tolerance than participants in the secular or relaxation groups... Those who practiced spiritual meditation nearly doubled their pain tolerance."
- Wachholtz & Pargament, Journal of Behavioral Medicine (2005)
Read that again: nearly doubled their pain tolerance. Not through denial. Not through distraction. Through connection with something greater than themselves.
What the Cross Teaches About Enduring Pain Without Gambling
Consider what Jesus endured: scourging that tore flesh from bone, a crown of thorns driven into His skull, nails through hands and feet, hours of suffocation as His body slowly collapsed. Medical historians describe crucifixion as one of the most painful deaths ever devised by humanity.
How did He endure without breaking?
"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
- Hebrews 12:2
Jesus endured because of His perfect faith in the Father. He looked beyond the present agony to the eternal joy set before Him. This was not escapism - He felt every lash, every nail. But His faith provided the pain tolerance to face what no one else could face.
The most utilitarian reason to have faith in Christ is simply this: it gives you the capacity to withstand what would otherwise destroy you.
Understanding Pain as a Spiritual Force in Gambling Addiction
Here is what I received this morning in prayer: pain behaves like a spirit that desperately wants to travel, to propagate, to expand from one host to another. When we cannot process our own pain, we unconsciously pass it on.
A 2025 systematic review in BMC Psychology examined intergenerational trauma transmission across multiple populations:
"Second-generation descendants of trauma survivors exhibit increased vulnerability to psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress symptoms... Trauma can be transmitted through altered parenting behaviors, family communication patterns, and biological mechanisms."
- BMC Psychology (2025), Systematic Review
The research confirms what Scripture has always taught: the sins and sufferings of the fathers are visited upon the children. Not as punishment, but as unprocessed pain seeking a new host.
This is why you gamble. This is why you drink. This is why you scroll endlessly. This is why you cannot stop - you are trying to contain a spirit of pain that keeps demanding release.
Why Gambling as Pain Escape Only Makes Pain Worse
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examined the relationship between problem gambling and escape motivation:
"Gambling to escape was significantly associated with gambling severity across all studies... Individuals with gambling problems are more likely to gamble as a way of escaping from negative emotional states, stress, and life problems."
- International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction (2024)
The research confirms what every gambler already knows: you gamble to escape pain. But here is the cruel irony - gambling creates more pain. Financial devastation. Relationship destruction. Self-hatred. Shame. The pain you were trying to escape multiplies exponentially.
You cannot escape pain by running from it. You can only transcend pain by walking through it with Someone who already conquered it.
How Christ Transforms Pain Into Purpose in Recovery
This morning I was reflecting on research paradigms - constructivist approaches focused on meaning-making versus quantitative approaches focused on objective measurement. And I realized something:
Christ represents objective truth and reality.
We live in a world that has abandoned the concept of objective truth. Everyone constructs their own reality. Everyone is entitled to their own truth. But this leaves us unmoored - floating in a sea of relative meaning with no solid ground beneath our feet.
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
- John 14:6
Christ is not a truth among many. He is the truth - objective reality personified. When you anchor yourself to Christ, you anchor yourself to something that cannot be moved by feelings, circumstances, or the opinions of others.
This is why faith provides pain tolerance. You are not just believing in positive thinking or visualization or stress management. You are connecting to the foundation of reality itself.
How Suffering Becomes Strength in Gambling Recovery
Alchemy was the medieval pursuit of transforming lead into gold. It never worked. But there is a real alchemy available to you - one that transforms pain into blessing.
Speaking out loud to the Lord every day about what pains you, what perplexes you, and how you struggle - this is the real-time process of transmutation. The Lord takes away your spirit of pain and transforms it into blessing.
This is what I teach in my program. Not just cognitive restructuring or behavioral modification - but a genuine relationship with the living God who specializes in transforming suffering into purpose.
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."
- Romans 8:28
This is not toxic positivity pretending pain does not hurt. It is the promise that pain surrendered to Christ becomes something different - something redemptive.
Why Gamblers Resist the Truth About Their Addiction
I understand why gamblers get angry at my content. When someone threatens your method of pain management, it feels like they are attacking your survival mechanism.
Alcohol numbs. Drugs distract. Gambling provides the illusion of control and the hope of rescue. Romance promises someone else will complete you. Media and entertainment transport you to worlds where your problems do not exist.
These are all attempts to manage pain without actually processing it. And when someone suggests they do not work - that they actually make things worse - it triggers defensive rage.
But I am not trying to take away your coping mechanism without offering something better. I am offering the only thing that actually works: a relationship with the God who bore your pain on the Cross.
A Daily Practice for Transforming Pain Without Gambling
Here is what I practice every morning, and what I teach my clients:
- Wake early and speak to the Lord out loud about yesterday - what happened, how it felt, what confused or troubled you
- Share your dreams from the night before - the Holy Spirit often speaks through dreams, revealing things your conscious mind cannot process
- Listen - sit in silence and pay attention to words, impressions, and feelings that arise. God's voice brings peace, clarity, and hope - never condemnation or terror
- Receive - accept that He has taken your pain and is transforming it. Your job is surrender, not striving
This is the true alchemy of pain. Not running from it. Not drowning it in dopamine. Not passing it to your children. But bringing it daily to the One who specializes in resurrection.
The Invitation
You have tried everything else. Gambling. Drinking. Therapy. Willpower. Self-help books. Positive thinking. Medication. Distraction after distraction after distraction.
The pain is still there, is it not?
The pain will keep traveling - propagating to your spouse, your children, your grandchildren, expanding its territory - until someone finally breaks the cycle by doing the one thing that actually works: surrendering it to Christ.
The pain you carry wants to travel, to propagate, to expand. Let it travel to the Cross instead.
